Merpati to fly to Broome<\/p>\n
PERTH, Australia (AP): Backpacking tourism in Australia's
\nremote northwest Kimberley region may boom with the introduction
\nof the area's first regular international flights from Indonesia
\nto Broome in November.<\/p>\n
One of Indonesia's airlines, Merpati Airlines, will fly two
\nreturn flights a week from Jakarta, via Denpasar, in Bali, to the
\ncoastal town of Broome, 1,430 miles (2,300 km) north of Perth,
\nWestern Australian state Tourism Minister Norman Moore announced.<\/p>\n
Moore said the flights would open the door to tourism in the
\nregion, with Broome acting as a launch point for tourists.<\/p>\n
He said the introduction of the flights tied in well with the
\nlaunch in Indonesia of advertisements promoting Western
\nAustralia.<\/p>\n
A spokesman for the minister said the flights would target
\nbackpackers from Britain, Germany and Italy traveling in Bali.<\/p>\n
\"The type of people they are attracting are the more
\nindividual type of tourists who like a bit of adventure and want
\nto hang around for a couple of weeks rather than just a few
\ndays,\" the spokesman said.<\/p>\n
He also said Merpati flying from Jakarta meant the airline
\ncould attract tourists arriving in Indonesia from all over the
\nworld.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian and expatriate market would also be targeted
\nand there were plans to grab a portion of the European market in
\nthe future.<\/p>\n
Between Christmas and New Year, and the Chinese New Year and
\nRamadan, Merpati would fly daily.<\/p>\n
The spokesman said there were also hopes to establish a flying
\nschool in Broome to train Indonesian pilots.<\/p>",
