Merapi survivors want to go home<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA: Survivors of the recent Mt. Merapi eruption have
\nlost patience with living in refugee barracks and want to return
\nto their villages, located within the danger zone.<\/p>\n
Yogyakarta military commander, Lt. Col. Supiadi, confirmed the
\nreport by saying the villagers wanted to go home after they heard
\nrumors that the authorities had intentions of sending them to
\ntransmigration projects outside Java.<\/p>\n
Merapi erupted on Nov. 22 killing 56 people and forcing
\nhundreds of others to shelters. Local authorities believe dozens
\nof people are still missing.<\/p>\n
Supiadi also told The Jakarta Post he has received reports
\nthat officials, responsible for aid distribution to Merapi
\nvictims, have made use of the operation for their own ends.<\/p>\n
\"If I find anyone manipulating the situation to meet their own
\nneeds, I will take stern measures,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Officials of the volcanology agency yesterday recorded that
\nthe volcano spewed out molten lava 88 times yesterday, reaching a
\nradius of one kilometer, they said.<\/p>\n
Heavy rains on Wednesday night made the Code river, which had
\nbeen clogged with lava, overflow, inundating 40 houses in this
\nCentral Java town. No casualties were reported. (har\/tis)<\/p>",
