Men wearing earrings 'haram'<\/p>\n
PALU, Central Sulawesi: The Central Sulawesi chapter of the
\nIndonesian Ulemas Council has issued a new ruling that, according
\nto Islamic teaching, a man is prohibited from wearing earrings.<\/p>\n
The secretary of the provincial council, Dahlan Tangkaderi,
\nsaid wearing earrings was feminine, and that was condemned by
\nAllah, Antara reported yesterday.<\/p>\n
The reason behind the issuance of the ruling was hadits
\n(the deeds and sayings of the Prophet Muhammad), which says:
\n\"Allah condemns men who act and garb like women, and women who
\nact and garb like men,\" Dahlan said.<\/p>\n
Quoting the provincial council chairman, Dahlan said the
\ncouncil was concerned with the trend that many schoolboys and men
\nwere acting and dressing like girls or women.<\/p>\n
Dahlan said no government officials had acted to ban the trend
\nand many parents had also failed to stop boys wearing earrings.
\n\"Therefore we feel it necessary to be tough. The central board of
\nthe Ulemas Council has yet to act on this,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Many rockers, artists and sportsmen, including former
\nArgentinean soccer star Diego Armando Maradona are known for
\nbeing individual and wearing an earring. This had apparently
\ncaused \"earring fever\" among males. (sur)<\/p>",
