'Men from lower-income group abusive'<\/p>\n
International Women's Day was commemorated on Monday across the
\nworld. The theme of the day was the issue of HIV\/AIDS, which is
\nincreasingly affecting women and girls. Another issue highlighted
\nby women's groups on that day was domestic violence. The Jakarta
\nPost talked to some residents about these issues.<\/p>\n
Janni, 28, is an analyst for a national bank on Jl. Sudirman,
\nCentral Jakarta. She lives in Setiabudi, South Jakarta:<\/p>\n
Economic problems have often triggered domestic violence as
\nmany cases involve low-income people. However, this is not always
\nso...<\/p>\n
Many men, whose income are very low, release their anger and
\nfrustration on their wives and children by beating them.<\/p>\n
I think, that women should also choose their husbands
\ncarefully to avoid domestic violence.<\/p>\n
A woman should have identified the true character of her
\nfuture husband before getting married. I think parents must stop
\nacting as matchmakers for their children. They should let them
\nmake their own choices. Making the wrong choice could be
\ndangerous or even fatal.<\/p>\n

Many domestic violence cases happen in low-income families. I
\nbelieve that domestic violence directly relates to the family's
\neconomic condition.<\/p>\n
Husbands who earn less than their wives beat them to relieve
\nthe pressure.<\/p>\n
Women who are victims of domestic violence must file reports
\nwith non-governmental organizations (NGOs) or legal aid
\nfoundations, if they are ashamed to report the case to the
\npolice. Many NGOs and foundations are equipped to handle such
\ncases now, so, I think it's not difficult to find them.<\/p>\n
