Members withdraw
\nsupport for PKB chiefs<\/p>\n
PURWOKERTO, Central Java (JP): A National Awakening Party
\n(PKB) official said here on Thursday that party members in the
\nregency of Indramayu, West Java, had officially withdrawn support
\nfor one of the party's House of Representatives' members, Abdul
\nKhalik, for his "betrayal" of the party.<\/p>\n
Chatibul Umam Wiranu, deputy secretary-general of the PKB's
\ncentral executive board, said that the regency chapter's decision
\nto withdraw the PKB whip from Abdul Khalik in the House
\nunderlined his (Khalik's) recent dismissal from the PKB for going
\nagainst the party line.<\/p>\n
Under Indonesia's political system, a member of the
\nlegislature represents his party rather than his constituents, so
\nthat a withdrawal of the party whip means he loses his seat in
\nthe House.<\/p>\n
"We are now considering input from the regency branches and
\nthe West Java regional board before selecting another person to
\nreplace Abdul Khalik in the House," Chatibul indicated.<\/p>\n
Khalik, who hails from Indramayu, was accused of being a
\nfollower of Matori Abdul Djalil, the deposed chairman of the PKB
\ncentral board.<\/p>\n
Umam Wiranu also disclosed that he had received reports on the
\nlikelihood of PKB members in Tegal, Central Java, withdrawing
\nsupport from Mathori.<\/p>\n
Matori was ousted from the leadership of the PKB after
\ncontinuing to act as the deputy speaker of the People's
\nConsultative Assembly despite his party's decision to boycott the
\nsupreme legislative body.<\/p>\n
Chatibul denied rumors of a rift in the PKB following the
\ndismissal of the two party officials. "The PKB remains solid.
\nTheir expulsion makes us stronger in carrying out our democratic
\nstruggle," he asserted.<\/p>\n
Emphasizing the party's uncompromising attitude toward any
\nform of betrayal, he concluded by pointing out that nearly all of
\nthe PKB's constituency committees had voiced their support for
