Megawati's husband answers summons<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Taufik Kiemas, husband of ousted Indonesian
\nDemocratic Party (PDI) leader Megawati Soekarnoputri, answered a
\npolice summons yesterday to appear as a witness in the Haryanto
\nTaslam case.<\/p>\n
Accompanied by 26 lawyers, Taufik presented himself at the
\nSouth Jakarta police precinct.<\/p>\n
Police said Taufik, who is a PDI legislator in the House of
\nRepresentatives, would be summoned to appear again on Feb. 27 to
\nanswer more questions. Megawati is expected to answer her summons
\ntomorrow.<\/p>\n
Taufik and Megawati have been summoned by police as witnesses
\nin the case against Haryanto for holding an illegal political
\nmeeting in Taufik's house.<\/p>\n
The charges relate to the PDI's 24th anniversary celebration
\nand a breaking-of-the-fast dinner on Jan. 10.<\/p>\n
Haryanto is the deputy PDI secretary-general under Megawati.<\/p>\n
Earlier this month Taufik and Megawati defied police summonses
\non the grounds the documents were incomplete in that they failed
\nto mention a suspect.<\/p>\n
The police later issued new summonses mentioning Haryanto.
\nThis was confirmed yesterday by Taufik's lawyers and a police
\ninvestigator who asked to remain anonymous.<\/p>\n
The investigator, a member of the interrogating team, said
\npolice had asked 29 questions to build a case against Haryanto.<\/p>\n
South Jakarta Police Precinct Chief Lt. Col. Sisno Adiwinoto
\nsurprised reporters when he told them the summonses did not
\nmention Haryanto as the suspect.<\/p>\n
"The police need not mention any suspect to summons people.
\nWhat's important in this case is that a crime has allegedly been
\ncommitted and that the police now are investigating it to find
\nout who the perpetrators were," he said.<\/p>\n
"It's possible that by the information derived from the
\nquestioning of witnesses, the police could arrive at more than
\none suspect for the alleged crime," Sisno said.<\/p>\n
The police investigator said: "From the questions asked, we
\nhave enough proof to charge Haryanto of violating Article 510 of
\nthe Criminal Code."<\/p>\n
He said that the police had around 20 more questions for
\nTaufik.<\/p>\n
Article 510 stipulates that anyone holding a public festivity
\nor street rally without the necessary permits is liable to a
\nmaximum penalty of two weeks imprisonment or a Rp 375 (20 U.S.
\ncents) fine.<\/p>\n
Trimedya Panjaitan, one of the four lawyers accompanying
\nTaufik during the questioning, told reporters that his client had
\nbeen interrogated in connection with the case against Haryanto.<\/p>\n
Trimedya said that the questions asked of his client
\nyesterday were on why Taufik had let his house be used for the
\ncelebration of the 24th PDI anniversary and why he had not asked
