Megawati told to withdraw party nomination<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI
\nPerjuangan) Deputy Chairman Dimyati Hartono hinted that Vice
\nPresident Megawati Sukarnoputri should withdraw her nomination as
\nparty chair for the good of the party.<\/p>\n
Speaking in Semarang, Central Java, on Monday, Dimyati said
\nthe party should be consistent in its policy of not allowing a
\ncentralization of party power.<\/p>\n
\"In the past we slammed Soeharto, who was not only president
\nbut also Golkar's patron. Now, Ibu Mega is going to do the same.
\nWe must be consistent,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Megawati last week announced her readiness to be reelected by
\nthe party congress planned for March in Semarang.<\/p>\n
Dimyati warned that a power centralization could reemerge
\nemulating the mistakes of former president Soeharto's regime.<\/p>\n
\"Such a thing should not happen to PDI-P,\" he added.<\/p>\n
He contended that as a democrat Megawati should take into
\naccount her current position as vice president, already burdened
\nwith great responsibility and heavy tasks.<\/p>\n
\"The (Megawati) statement should not have been uttered to the
\npublic,\" said Dimyati who himself has been touted in some circles
\nas leading candidate to takeover from Megawati.<\/p>\n
Dimyati asserted that the party should not depend too much on
\none person but on the established system and the potential of its
\ncadre.<\/p>\n
\"If asked about her readiness Ibu Mega could publicly say
\n'yes' but ideally she should say, 'I will take it into
\nconsideration,\" he said as quoted by Antara from the Central Java
\nprovincial capital.<\/p>\n
Unrest<\/p>\n
In a related development, the PDI Perjuangan faction at the
\nHouse of Representatives condemned the recent wave of unrest in
\nseveral provinces and called on security forces to take stern
\nmeasures.<\/p>\n
The faction also deplored the abortive bombing of the grand
\nmosque in Yogyakarta and the pelting of numerous churches there
\non Sunday.<\/p>\n
\"For these incidents, our faction urges security authorities
\nto carry out a thorough investigation and arrest persons involved
\nin the actions. Such incidents could occur in other areas if
\nstrong measures are not taken,\" I Made Urip, the faction's
\nchairman, said in a statement here on Monday.<\/p>\n
He said the incidents had similarities to conflicts in other
\nprovinces, with the same purpose of creating disturbance at home.<\/p>\n
\"Our faction calls on security authorities not to be
\ninfluenced by certain sides trying to break up national unity,\"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
The faction also called on the people to remain alert against
\nrumors and provocation aimed at creating chaos, saying certain
\ninterest groups have intentionally incited numerous violent
\nincidents in the provinces with the capital city of Jakarta as
