Megawati to open new fishing port<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The city is set to have its first ocean fishing
\nport of Samudera Jakarta in Muara Baru, North Jakarta, slated to
\nbe officiated by Vice President Megawati Soekarnoputri on Friday.<\/p>\n
\"The fishing port will become the service center for all
\nfishing and related industrial activities on the Northern Coast
\nof Java as well as other international-scope activities,\"
\nMinister of Maritime affairs and Fisheries Sarwono Kusumaatmadja
\ntold The Jakarta Post on Thursday.<\/p>\n
The much-awaited Muara Baru port project began in 1980 in four
\nphases, including the reclamation of a 29-hectare area in Muara
\nBaru, the setting up of sea walls as wave breakers and a
\nnavigation system.<\/p>\n
The project cost Japanese Yen 12.6 billion made possible
\nthrough a loan from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation
\n(JBIC) as well as other foreign funds and from government
\nassisted funds.<\/p>\n
The port is estimated to have absorbed some 20,000 workers
\nthis year and no less than 5,000 fishermen are conducting
\nfishing-related activities here.<\/p>\n
Among the facilities available in the port are a service
\ncenter for industry, post fishing processing center, vessel
\nrepair yard, restaurants and other tourist attractions.<\/p>\n
\"We are also planning to integrate the activities of the port
\nwith the existing Sunda Kelapa port which has been in existence
\nsince 1630. And the Jakarta administration can further work on
\ndeveloping Sunda Kelapa as a tourism site,\" the minister said.<\/p>\n
The port is complete with office buildings, proper drainage
\nsystem, fish auction house, cold storage, ice factory, clean
\nwater pipelines and supply, easy road access and other supporting
\nfacilities.<\/p>\n
\"With the completion of the port we can also work out a scheme
\nto develop cooperatives and supporting activities for the
\nfishermen in a bid to improve their welfare,\" Sarwono said.<\/p>\n
Another ongoing fishing port project is set in Kendari the
\ncapital of Southeast Sulawesi.<\/p>\n
Sarwono further said that the fishing community living in
\nMuara Baru area has set up a community watch system to avoid
\npossible sea encroachment by foreign trawlers or vessels
\nconducting illegal fishing.<\/p>\n
\"The community will also work together with the existing
\nofficers to prevent other kinds of natural resources misuse
\nranging from dynamite fishing to stealing fish,\" he added.<\/p>\n
At the same time the local community can gain greater
\nadvantage from the sea management through preservation and proper
\nexploitation, Sarwono added.<\/p>\n
\"The local communities will be the ones who are actively
\nguarding their area and creating a conducive situation for
\nfishing development and hopefully they will be able to improve
