        "content": "<p>Megawati signs labor court law<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA: President Megawati Soekarnoputri has signed Law No.<br>\n2\/2004 on the settlement of labor disputes, which replaces Law.<br>\nNo. 22\/1957.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of Manpower and Transmigration Jacob Nuwa Wea said<br>\nthe President signed the law on Thursday, but that it would only<br>\ntake effect in January 2005.<\/p>\n<p>\"The current system of labor dispute settlement remains<br>\neffective while the government familiarizes everyone with the new<br>\nlaw over the next one year,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>The minister called on the Indonesian Employers Association<br>\n(Apindo) and labor unions to prepare ad hoc judges to assist<br>\ncareer judges in running the labor court when the new law comes<br>\ninto force next year.<\/p>\n<p>\"Apindo and labor unions have to be prepared with ad hoc<br>\njudges to try labor cases as of next January,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>The new law, which will allow for less costly and faster<br>\ntrials of labor cases, states that both workers and employers are<br>\nallowed to bring cases to labor courts if they fail to resolve<br>\ntheir disputes in bipartite negotiations or through arbitration.<br>\n-- JP<\/p>",
