Indonesia\u2019s fifth president and PDIP chairwoman, Megawati\nSoekarnoputri, has called for the structure of the United Nations\nSecurity Council (UNSC) to be changed. Megawati believes the current\nstructure needs to be adapted to the state of the world today.<\/p>\n
She made the remarks during a dialogue with Timor-Leste President\nJos\u00e9 Ramos-Horta and several Nobel laureates and Turing Award winners at\nthe Megawati Institute building in Central Jakarta on Friday\n(28\/8\/2026). Megawati noted that the UN Security Council\u2019s structure was\ncreated after the Second World War.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy father was someone who always asked that the United Nations must\nchange itself because it was created after the Second World War,\u201d she\nsaid.<\/p>\n
\u201cCivilisation is different now. This is to ensure greater justice,\u201d\nshe continued.<\/p>\n
She argued that changing the UNSC structure is necessary to create a\nmore just world order. Megawati wants nations that were not yet\nindependent in the past to also have a place on the UN Security\nCouncil.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have repeatedly asked that the Security Council\u2019s structure should\nno longer be what it is today. It must truly undergo a new change, where\nthe nations that exist now, which in the past may not yet have been\nindependent, also get a place on the Security Council,\u201d she\nexplained.<\/p>\n
Megawati hopes the idea will gain support. She then questioned the\nUN\u2019s ability to resolve the conflicts and wars that are still\noccurring.<\/p>\n
\u201cHopefully what I have said will receive tremendous support. Because\nit is impossible\u2026 as things stand now, in my view as a president, why\ncan wars not be resolved by the United Nations? That is a big question\nfor me,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
On the occasion, Megawati also touched on technological developments\nthat could strengthen cooperation between nations. She said advances in\ncommunication technology have made the distance between countries\nincreasingly irrelevant.<\/p>\n
\u201cTechnology has proven capable of supporting cooperation through\nincreasingly reliable communication systems,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow we feel as though we have no distance. Within minutes we can\nmeet, we can talk, and so on. Through this forum, I call for the\nimportance of technology for the advancement of civilisation. Once\nagain, the advancement of civilisation, not the destruction of\ncivilisation,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n
Megawati urged that technological development be used for the\nadvancement of civilisation. In her view, international law is needed to\ngovern such developments.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe negative impacts of science and technology on humanity must be\nprevented through international cooperation. We need international law\nthat regulates this, while also preventing the world from becoming\nfurther divided by geopolitical competition and economic interests,\u201d she\nsaid.<\/p>\n
\u201cTherefore, today\u2019s meeting is not merely a meeting with scientists\nwho have produced extraordinary achievements.
