        "content": "<p>Megawati betrays Sukarno's views<\/p>\n<p>Having known Sukarno well since I first met him in Yogyakarta<br>\nin 1948, I was shocked to learn that Megawati Soekarnoputri is<br>\naccepting the advice of those who advocate the incorporation of<br>\nEast Timor into the Indonesian state. Such a course would be a<br>\ngross betrayal of Sukarno's views and flagrant abandonment of the<br>\nrealities of Indonesian history.<\/p>\n<p>When I knew Sukarno there were certainly some Indonesians who<br>\nurged annexation of East Timor, but he steadfastly opposed doing<br>\nso. Among his objections, one also strongly shared by Hatta, was<br>\nthat for Indonesia to annex East Timor would undercut the logic<br>\nand the argument for its claim to all of the Netherlands East<br>\nIndies, including West Irian.<\/p>\n<p>Later, Sukarno additionally argued against annexation of East<br>\nTimor because to do so would make it appear that Indonesia was<br>\nimitating India's 1961 annexation of the Portuguese colony of<br>\nGoa.<\/p>\n<p>GEORGE MCT.KAHIN<\/p>\n<p>Ithaca, New York<\/p>",
