Megawati announces new PDI Perjuangan lineup<\/p>\n
SEMARANG (JP): Megawati Soekarnoputri, coming off her
\nreelection as chairwoman of the Indonesian Democratic Party of
\nStruggle (PDI Perjuangan), announced the lineup of the party's
\nexecutive board.<\/p>\n
Megawati, who is the country's vice president, was also quick
\nto warn party supporters they could not rely on her forever.<\/p>\n
\"All party members must be ready to take over from me. Be an
\nexcellent cadre. Who knows, one of you could be nominated to
\nbecome party chief,\" she said.<\/p>\n
The party's executive board includes five new faces and
\naccommodates different religious groups and regions. The new
\ndeputy chairmen are Karel Lukkas Degey from Irian Jaya, Imam
\nMundjiat from East Kalimantan, Gunawan Wirosaroyo from Central
\nJava and Roy B.B. Janis and Arifin Panigoro, both from Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The remaining three deputy chairmen posts went to Kwik Kian
\nGie, I Gusti Ngurah Sare and Theo Syafei, all of whom were on the
\nold executive board.<\/p>\n
Sutjipto was appointed party secretary-general, which is seen
\nby many as the second-most strategic and important position in
\nthe party. The deputies to the secretary-general are Mangara
\nSiahaan, a former party deputy chairman; Pramono Anung from
\nJakarta; Yakobus K.M. Padang, the secretary of the South Sulawesi
\nprovincial chapter of PDI Perjuangan; and Agnita Singadikane, the
\nsecretary of the party's Jambi provincial chapter.<\/p>\n
Noviantika Nasution, the party's former deputy treasurer,
\nreplaces Laksamana Sukardi as treasurer. She will be assisted by
\nJohannes Lukman from West Sumatra and Sri Oetari Ratna Dewi from
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
Megawati formed the executive board after winning unanimous
\nsupport for her reelection as chairwoman earlier in the day. The
\ncongress previously agreed to allow a system which gave the
\nchairperson-elect the power to name the party's executive board.<\/p>\n
Following her reelection, Megawati attempted to quell the
\ncontroversy surrounding this system.<\/p>\n
\"I hope my reelection does not pose a threat to the process of
\ndemocratization,\" she said.<\/p>\n
She conceded it was difficult for her to select the party
\nexecutives because of the need to maintain objectivity, and the
\nfact that she could not accommodate all of the aspirations of the
\ncongress.<\/p>\n
\"Of utmost importance is that all of the new members of the
\nexecutive board are expected to work consistently and diligently.<\/p>\n
\"Differences of opinion about the system should teach us a
\nlesson about how to encourage democracy,\" she said.<\/p>\n
Both Sutjipto and Roy hailed the new lineup of the executive
\nboard, saying it represented different regions, including the
\nvolatile province of Irian Jaya, and the five political groups
\nthat founded the party in 1973.<\/p>\n
But many party members questioned the lineup and expressed
\ndoubt that the new executives would be able to cooperate with one
\nanother in tackling the challenges of the future.<\/p>\n
Former deputy chairman Mochtar Buchori said some of the
\nexecutive members were uneducated cadres and others were Megawati
\nloyalists who lacked the skill to run the party.<\/p>\n
\"Kwik is the only educated professional on the executive
\nboard. I am sad the management of the party was entrusted to such
\nuneducated and unprofessional cadres,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Soetardjo Soerjogoeritno, another former deputy chairman,
\nconcurred, saying the selection of the new executive board was
\nnot based on rational and objective considerations.<\/p>\n
\"I'm pessimistic about whether they can carry out their jobs,\"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
Haryanto Taslam, a former deputy secretary-general of the
\nparty, said that with the new unprofessional executives, the
\nparty faced a gloomy future.<\/p>\n
Party member and outspoken House of Representatives legislator
\nAberson Marle Sihaloho criticized Megawati for her failure to
\nfind positions for such capable party members as Dimyati Hartono
\nand Eros Djarot.<\/p>\n
\"I just hope Megawati will be able to work with the unskilled
\ncadres to make PDI Perjuangan a modern party in the future,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
In her capacity as the country's vice president, Megawati
\nclosed the six-day congress on Saturday. However, party members
\nwill have little time to rest as they begin preparing for
\nregional party congresses.<\/p>\n
