Megawati and history<\/p>\n
The first-ever direct presidential election took place on
\nMonday. The quick count jointly conducted by Metro TV and the
\nInstitute of Research, Education and Information of Social and
\nEconomic Affairs (LP3ES) shows that Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has
\nwon the election. The official count by the General Elections
\nCommission (KPU) has yet to be completed.<\/p>\n
Susilo, popularly known by his initials as SBY, has received
\ncongratulations from friends and relatives.<\/p>\n
We could say that the coming days belong to SBY. The question
\nnow is does Megawati Soekarnoputri still have \"anything\" left
\nafter the poll?<\/p>\n
We just want to remind the people to place Megawati properly
\nwithin the historical context. Megawati's defeat must be put in
\nhistorical perspective as the direct presidential election is
\nMegawati's masterpiece. Megawati took the initiative to promote
\nthe concept of a direct presidential election with the risk that
\nshe could be ousted and she took that risk.<\/p>\n
Now that she has become the first victim of her decision,
\nMegawati should not shed tears. She must spread her smile as she
\nhas brought to the nation a monumental victory in the
\ncivilization of democracy. Her courage to make the decision in
\nthe interests of the nation, risking her self esteem is indeed
\nthe courage of a statesman. Megawati, thus, deserves this
\nattribute.<\/p>\n
Megawati's defeat in the presidential election must not be
\nwritten as the fate of a loser. Megawati is the winner for all.<\/p>\n
