Mega urged to fire Jakob Tobing<\/p>\n
CIREBON, West Java: Hundreds of supporters of the Indonesian
\nDemocratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) went on strike at
\nthe Cirebon legislature building to protest the ongoing amendment
\nbeing made by the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) into the
\n1945 Constitution.<\/p>\n
They demanded PDI Perjuangan Chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri
\ndismiss Jakob Tobing, who chairs the Assembly's ad hoc committee
\npreparing the amendments, because he refused to stop amending the
\nConstitution.<\/p>\n
Jakob is a legislator of PDI Perjuangan at the House of
\nRepresentatives and at the Assembly.<\/p>\n
The demonstrators, who came from a variety of mass
\norganizations under PDI Perjuangan, said the amendment had to be
\nstopped because it was liable to conflicts that could jeopardize
\nnational unity.<\/p>\n
Iwan Hendrawan, coordinator of the demonstration, said the MPR
\nshould not interfere with sensitive issues in the Constitution
\nbecause such action could cause new conflict.<\/p>\n
"The way the Assembly is drafting amendments to the
\nConstitution has brought major changes to almost all its
\nchapters. They are doing it without any historical
\nconsideration," he said.<\/p>\n
He said Jakob should be replaced because he had bowed to the
\npressure of other parties in amending the Constitution.<\/p>\n
Chairman of the Cirebon legislature Suryana pledged that he
\nwould channel their political demands to both Megawati and the
\nAssembly.<\/p>\n
Iwan and Suryana are PDI Perjuangan legislators at the Cirebon
