Mega condemns attacks on U.S.<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President Megawati Soekarnoputri condemned on
\nWednesday the \"barbaric and indiscriminate\" terrorist attacks on
\nthe United States, underlining the need for international
\ncooperation to fight terrorism.<\/p>\n
In a message to President George W. Bush, Megawati expressed
\nher deepest condolences and sympathy to the government and the
\npeople of the United States.<\/p>\n
She also expressed \"great shock\" over the tragic attacks on
\nNew York's World Trade Center and the Pentagon just outside
\nWashington.<\/p>\n
\"The Indonesian government condemns this brutal and
\nindiscriminate attack that has resulted in a great number of
\nvictims among innocent people ... we express our deepest
\ncondolences and sympathy to the U.S. government and its people,
\nespecially to the bereaved,\" she said.<\/p>\n
She said the attacks \"underlined the need for international
\ncooperation to fight terrorism, in which Indonesia was prepared
\nto cooperate to face any acts of terrorism.\"<\/p>\n
The U.S. Embassy in Jakarta thanked the government for the
\nprotection of its mission, saying that the U.S. \"strongly hopes
\nto intensify cooperation with Indonesia in the fight against
\ninternational terrorism.\"<\/p>\n
Megawati's planned trip to the U.S. now hangs in the balance,
\nas the government is still waiting for information from the host
\ncountry on security conditions there.<\/p>\n
Minister of Foreign Affairs Hassan Wirayuda said Jakarta would
\nconsult Washington in the next two days on whether or not
\nMegawati could push through with her visit scheduled for Sept. 19
\nto Sept. 25.<\/p>\n
Correcting a report by The Jakarta Post, Hassan said on
\nWednesday there had not yet been any discussion as to whether the
\ntrip would be canceled.<\/p>\n
\"We were invited by the U.S. government so we have to wait for
\ninformation from them on the planned trip,\" he remarked.<\/p>\n
Presidential Secretary Kemal Munawar said there had been no
\nnews from the U.S. government on the planned visit and the
\nIndonesian government would wait for their confirmation.<\/p>\n
\"We understand that the U.S. government must be very busy now,
\nso we will wait. However, the planned visit to Japan remains as
\nscheduled,\" Kemal told journalists.<\/p>\n
Megawati was initially scheduled to leave for Washington on
\nSept. 17 to hold a meeting with President George W. Bush and to
\naddress the United Nations General Assembly Session in New York.
\nOn the return journey, she planned to stop off in Japan on Sept.
\n26 to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi. (dja)<\/p>",
