Mega breaks Marriott silence, kind of<\/p>\n
President Megawati Soekarnoputri has finally spoken publicly
\nabout Tuesday's suicide attack on the JW Marriott Hotel in
\nJakarta -- but only briefly and only after last minute panic from
\nforeign ministry staff.<\/p>\n
Just minutes before President Megawati Soekarnoputri was due
\nto read a prepared speech at the 36th anniversary of the
\nAssociation of Southeast Asia Nations (ASEAN) at the ASEAN
\nSecretariat in South Jakarta on Friday, officials realized it
\nfailed to mention the attack.<\/p>\n
Foreign ministry officials scribbled two paragraphs about the
\nMarriott bombing on a separate sheet of paper, while Minister of
\nForeign Affairs Hassan Wirayuda informed Megawati about the
\nadditional statement.<\/p>\n
In the end, Megawati did not read the prepared paragraphs but
\nmanaged to add a few words to update her speech.<\/p>\n
And the reference: \"... and a few days ago at the Marriott
\nHotel Jakarta.\"<\/p>\n
In keeping with her reticent style, and as she did after last year's
\nBali bombings, Megawati has kept to the sidelines following the
\nlatest attack in the Marriott Hotel Jakarta and has left senior
