Meeting to unravel labor dispute<\/p>\n

Investors, union leaders and government officials will hold a
\ncrisis meeting here on Monday in attempts to solve the lingering
\nproblems that have befallen the country's industrial sectors.<\/p>\n
The meeting follows a spate of bad news for many sectors,
\nincluding the shutdown of numerous plants, labor conflicts and
\nthe relocation of many factories to more labor-friendly
\ncountries.<\/p>\n
\"No target has been set up. But at least we are trying to seek
\na compromise,\" Anton Supit, a member at the Crisis Center and the
\nchairman of the Indonesian Footwear Association, told The Jakarta
\nPost.<\/p>\n
It will become the first meeting to be facilitated by the
\nCrisis Center since it was established by the government and
\nbusiness players two weeks ago.<\/p>\n
The center seeks to become a troubleshooter for various
\nproblems now befalling the country's trade and business sectors.<\/p>\n
Labor conflicts, which have been on the rise since the country
\nlaunched political and economic reforms in 1998, have hurt many
\nof the country's industries and scared away many investors.<\/p>\n
Workers have demanded businesses pay them properly, saying
\nthat they are poorly paid. On the other hand, business groups
\nclaim that workers are demanding too much, and have failed to
\nincrease productivity. As a result, labor disputes are
\nincreasingly common, prompting a number of businesses to relocate
\noverseas.<\/p>\n
The meeting is hoped to bridge the differences between the two
\nparties.<\/p>\n
The meeting is scheduled to be held in Atrium Senen in Central
\nJakarta at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
No information was available as to whether Minister of
\nManpower Jacob Nuwa Wea or Minister of Trade and Industry Rini M.
\nSoewandi would attend the meeting.<\/p>",
