Medical team checks Winfried<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: A team of doctors examined on Monday codefendant in the
\nRp 40 billion corruption scandal of the State Logistics Agency
\n(Bulog), Winfried Simatupang, in an attempt to obtain second
\nopinion for the state prosecutors to bring the businessman back
\nto detention.<\/p>\n
Cardiologist Hanafi B. Trisnohadi, who leads the team from the
\nstate-owned Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital, said the
\nexamination, which took four hours, would continue on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
"The result, including the recommendation on whether Winfried
\ncan resume trial, will be announced on Wednesday," he said.<\/p>\n
Winfried, a contractor to the Raudlatul Jannah Foundation, was
\na no-show last week in the court examination. Lawyer John K. Azis
\nsaid his client was suffering from a coronary heart problem. The
\nCentral Jakarta District Court judges ordered a further check.<\/p>\n
The prosecutors insisted on jailing Winfried, should the
\ndoctors find his health problem is not a strong enough reason to
\nescape trial.<\/p>\n
The case centers on the misuse of Bulog's nonbudgetary money
\nto finance a government project in 1999, that turned out a scam.
\nIt allegedly involved House of Representatives Speaker Akbar
\nTandjung and foundation chairman Dadang Sukandar.--JP<\/p>",
