PT Mineral Industri Indonesia (MIND ID) continues to push campaigns\nregarding sustainable mining practices. This commitment is also one of\nthe key issues raised in the MediaMIND 2026 journalism competition. This\nyear, MediaMIND 2026 carries the theme \u2018From the Earth for National\nSovereignty\u2019. Through this competition, MIND ID aims to create a space\nfor discussion regarding the mining industry\u2019s contribution, including\nefforts to implement sustainability principles in business\nactivities.<\/p>\n
MIND ID Corporate Secretary, Pria Utama, stated that the mining\nindustry should not be viewed solely as an activity that has a negative\nimpact on the environment. According to him, mining practices need to be\ncarried out by considering economic benefits alongside responsibilities\ntowards the environment and society.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe mining activities we undertake are beneficial. We do not simply\nmine, leave, and then destroy the surrounding ecosystem. We have ESG; we\nunderstand that we are conducting what we call green mining,\u201d said Pria\nduring the MediaMIND 2026 Socialisation event at the Energy Building,\nCentral Jakarta, on Monday (14\/9).<\/p>\n
Consequently, several sub-themes raised in MediaMIND 2026 also\ndiscuss green mining, the implementation of environmental, social, and\ngovernance (ESG) principles, and various other sustainability\nissues.<\/p>\n
The implementation of sustainable mining practices is also\nhighlighted by PT Vale Indonesia Tbk, one of the companies part of MIND\nID. Head of Strategy and Business Development at PT Vale Indonesia Tbk,\nMateus Sigit Harisulistya, stated that sustainability aspects have now\nbecome part of industrial competitiveness.<\/p>\n
\u201cSustainability is a part of competitiveness,\u201d said Sigit.<\/p>\n
He cited the processing of nickel ore using High Pressure Acid Leach\n(HPAL) technology as an example. In his view, although this technology\nproduces lower emissions compared to the pyrometallurgical system, the\nHPAL process still produces a significant amount of residue or tailings.\nTherefore, the development of such processing facilities must be carried\nout with attention to appropriate standards and management.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut with the right partner, and a commitment to building better, we\nemphasise to our partners that the HPAL we build must meet international\nstandards. That is what will be implemented, from the engineering phase\nuntil we build the HPAL,\u201d he explained on the same occasion.<\/p>\n
ESG as a Consideration in the Battery Industry<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, PT Industri Baterai Indonesia, or Indonesia Battery\nCorporation (IBC), considers the implementation of ESG to be a vital\nnecessity in the development of the battery industry. President Director\nof IBC, Aditya Farhan Arif, stated that attention to sustainability\naspects is one of the factors that can influence product competitiveness\nin the market.<\/p>\n
\u201cWithout being told, we will certainly be concerned with ESG. Because\nif not, the product potentially will not sell,\u201d said Aditya at the same\nevent.<\/p>\n
According to him, the transition from internal combustion engine\nvehicles to electric vehicles (EV) indeed has the potential to reduce\ncarbon dioxide emissions. However, this reduction in emissions must be\nviewed holistically, including the energy sources used in the production\nprocess and the operation of electric vehicles.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn looking at total emissions, we look from upstream to downstream.\nNot just in one segment like batteries or MHP (mixed hydroxide\nprecipitate); we must look from upstream to downstream. Because the\nframework used is life cycle assessment,\u201d explained Aditya.<\/p>\n
In an effort to reduce overall emissions, IBC is implementing an\nenergy mix in the development of its industrial portfolio.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat is why IBC is implementing an energy mix in its portfolio. For\ninstance, in our factory in Karawang, we have installed 18 MW of solar\nPV, and later in our battery material factories, we will also implement\na mix with clean energy. This is so that, in total, we can offset\nemissions overall,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
In addition to the use of clean energy, the company is also\ndeveloping recycling efforts. According to Aditya, this process is part\nof the strategy to reduce the emission footprint generated throughout\nthe production chain.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is our effort to be competitive in ESG-sensitive markets.\nTherefore, social and governance issues, in addition to environmental\nissues, should not become problems because we are part of this SOE.\nThus, social and governance aspects are an integrated part of it,\u201d he\nconcluded.<\/p>\n
Through the implementation of ESG principles, the mining and\ndownstreaming industries are deemed to need to view sustainability as\npart of a long-term strategy.
