'Media promotes violence and indecency'<\/p>\n
In a recent study conducted by the Cinta Anak Bangsa Foundation
\n(YCAB), a non-governmental organization working to combat drug
\nuse among teenagers, one in two student respondents have a
\npermissive attitude toward pornography, while one in five view
\nillicit drugs and violence as acceptable. The Jakarta Post asked
\nresidents their thoughts on the issue.<\/p>\n
Kiftiawati, 26, is a part-time teacher at Nurul Fikri Islamic
\nHigh School in Cimanggis, Depok. She lives in Pasar Minggu, South
\nJakarta:<\/p>\n
As a teacher, I'm very concerned about the results of the
\nstudy. It shows that schools as an educational institution have
\nfailed to prepared their students to be intelligent and critical
\nin terms of discerning between what's right and wrong. A
\npermissive attitude toward sex, illicit drugs and violence are
\nnot what we, teachers, expected.<\/p>\n
However, the students and teachers are not the only parties
\nresponsible in this case. To a certain extent, the freedom of the
\npress has also affected students' perception. Some tabloids,
\nwhich show indecent pictures and violence, are sold on the
\nstreets every day without anyone monitoring them.<\/p>\n
I prefer to use a more gentle approach in handling students
\nwith such problems, such as holding regular group discussions or
\nhanging out at the school cafeteria to listen to their inner
\nvoice. After that we discuss the solutions together, while I do
\nmy best to avoid dictating my views.<\/p>\n
But, the government should help me in monitoring and giving
\nsanctions to media that promote violence and pornography.<\/p>\n

I blame this situation on the free distribution and access of
\nVCDs, magazines and websites that contain pornographic material.
\nPeople, along with the government of course, should fight against
\nthis.<\/p>\n
To prevent my children from having such a permissive attitude
\nor even getting involved in sex and violence, I will try my best
\nto position myself as their friends, to be there when they need
\nto ask about anything, including sex.<\/p>\n
But the most important thing is that society needs to draw the
\nline between what is proper and improper. Even if my children are
\ntaught well at home and school, they could change when they see
\npeople behaving inappropriately such as kissing or exhibiting
\nsexually suggestive behavior in public places.<\/p>\n
