Medan workers' protest goes on<\/p>\n
MEDAN, North Sumatra (JP): Hundreds of workers from 55
\ncompanies have flocked to the governor's office to demand
\nreinstatement of a worker who was reportedly fired.<\/p>\n
The workers' protest entered its 19th day on Tuesday following
\nthe dismissal of a worker from PT Gunung Gahapi Sakti.<\/p>\n
The protesters said they also wanted the company to give its
\nworkers better welfare benefits.<\/p>\n
The protesters accused the company of swindling social
\nsecurity money, totaling Rp 3.2 billion, which belonged to the
\nworkers.<\/p>\n
No deal has been reached between the workers and the company.<\/p>\n
\"If the company ignores the workers' demands, we will continue
\nour protest. We have support from 55 companies,\" said Alfian
\nPanjaitan, coordinator of the protest.<\/p>\n
The chairman of Independent Forum for Mabar-Belawan Workers'
\nAspirations, Syahril, threatened to stage a bigger protest if the
\nworkers' rights were denied.<\/p>\n
R. Tambunan, head of the provincial manpower ministry office,
\nsaid that the alleged embezzlement of the social security fund
\nwas being investigated by Medan Police. \"Let's be patient and
\nwait for the results,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Mass worker protests led to vandalism which paralyzed the
