An elderly woman, Sugini, has amazed residents of Plalar hamlet,\nTengklik village, Tawangmangu district, Karanganyar regency, Central\nJava, after successfully chasing a leopard that entered her home using\nnothing but a sandal.<\/p>\n
The incident happened at about 1am on Wednesday (21 October). Forest\nand land fires on the slopes of Mount Lawu have driven wild animals down\ntowards residential areas. Several residents\u2019 goats have also been\nkilled by a wild animal believed to be a leopard.<\/p>\n
Sugini was the first resident to notice the animal inside the\nsettlement. Her grandson, Rizal, recounted the tense moment.<\/p>\n
\u201cGrandma was in her room when she heard what sounded like a cat\ngrowling. It just wouldn\u2019t stop, even though she had banged on things to\nscare it,\u201d said Rizal, 20, as quoted by detik on Monday (26\nOctober).<\/p>\n
When Sugini left her room, she saw the large animal. She threw a\nsandal at it, and it fled through a window near the cattle pen, breaking\nthe glass.<\/p>\n
\u201cThen Grandma came out of her room and saw the large animal. She\ngrabbed a sandal and threw it at the leopard. It panicked and tried to\njump through this window [the kitchen window with the white glass].\nSince it couldn\u2019t get out that way, she threw the sandal again. It\npanicked, ran towards the cattle pen, broke the window near it and\nescaped,\u201d Rizal said.<\/p>\n
Rizal said the animal that entered the house had characteristics\nresembling a black panther: black fur, fangs, a long tail and a body\nabout the size of a goat.<\/p>\n
After it left, Rizal checked the pen and found a goat in critical\ncondition, with bite wounds to its neck.<\/p>\n
The animal\u2019s appearance is believed to be connected to forest and\nland fires on the slopes of Mount Lawu, which may have driven wildlife\ncloser to settlements. Tawangmangu district head Eko Joko Widodo said at\nleast five residents\u2019 goats had been found dead with bite wounds.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhatever it was, livestock died, whether attacked by a leopard or\nsomething else. There were bite marks.
