        "content": "<p>Mayors scolded for eyesores<\/p>\n<p>MANILA (AFP): Philippine President Fidel Ramos yesterday gave<br>\na scolding to the 17 mayors of the districts that make up<br>\nMetropolitan Manila for the poor condition of the country's<br>\ncapital.<\/p>\n<p>This included giving the mayors aerial tours by helicopter and<br>\na video showing uncollected garbage, clogged drainage canals,<br>\nflooded, potholed and obstructed streets and other eyesores, a<br>\npalace statement said.<\/p>\n<p>\"I want you to keep your eyes open. You should know what is<br>\ngoing on in your surroundings,\" the statement quoted Ramos as<br>\ntelling the mayors.<\/p>\n<p>Ramos said the capital should be kept clean not only because<br>\nthe country was hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation<br>\n(APEC) forum this November but because, as elected officials,<br>\nthey were suppose to \"make sure that your house is in order.\"<\/p>\n<p>Ramos also ordered the release of 100 million pesos (US$3.8<br>\nmillion) for the completion of major projects in the capital and<br>\nalso urged the mayors to acquire land in the provinces outside<br>\nthe capital to relocate some of the squatters in Manila.<\/p>",
