Mayoralty to seal old warehouses<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The West Jakarta authorities have sealed 34 out
\nof the 53 old warehouses in the Kota downtown area due to the
\nreluctance of their owners to relocate their storage sites.<\/p>\n
The sealed warehouses are located on Jl. Roa Malaka, Jl. Tiang
\nBendera, Jl. Pangeran Jayakarta and Jl. Pinangsia Raya. The
\nsealing was done by officers of the West Jakarta public order and
\nsecurity office in a three-day operation.<\/p>\n
The other 19 warehouses will be sealed this week unless the
\nowners abide by the West Jakarta mayoralty's decision on the
\nrelocation plan, the head of the security office Karsidin said on
\nSaturday.<\/p>\n
Last month, the West Jakarta mayoralty issued the relocation
\norder, requiring the owners of the 53 warehouses in Kota to move
\ntheir storage facilities to other locations, including Kapuk and
\nPluit in West Jakarta, Ciracas in East Jakarta and Sunter in
\nNorth Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The city administration plans to revitalize the downtown area
\ninto an attractive tourist site.<\/p>\n
The owners of the warehouses will be allowed to use their
\nbuildings for tourism or entertainment businesses, including
\ndiscotheques and restaurants.<\/p>\n
Besides protecting the old buildings, the plan is also aimed
\nat supporting the tourist industry in the area, where there are a
\nnumber of prominent museums, including the maritime, wayang
\n(leather puppet) and Jakarta history museum.<\/p>\n
Under the gubernatorial decree, Kota has been earmarked as a
\nprotected area.<\/p>\n
Based on the decree, the authorities have asked the owners of
\nold buildings in Kota not to change the architectural structures
