Mayoralty to demolish Senayan building<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Central Jakarta mayoralty has threatened to
\ndemolish a building within the Bung Karno Sports Complex as the
\nowner had violated its construction permit, an official said here
\non Monday.<\/p>\n
Central Jakarta Mayor Andi Subur Abdullah noted that
\nthe site where the building is constructed is zoned as public
\nspace. The building is located south of the Jakarta Convention
\nCenter<\/p>\n
"The mayoralty expects the company (who owns the building) to
\ndemolish the building. Should it refuse to do so, we shall take
\nstern action by demolishing it this weekend," he remarked.<\/p>\n
He said the mayoralty had warned the building management PT
\nAnggara on June 25 and on Aug. 7 to stop construction. However,
\nthe company continued regardless.<\/p>\n
PT Anggara claimed that it had received a permit to construct
\na temporary structure on the 7,000-square-meter area from the
\nBung Karno Sports Complex Management Board, which manages the
\narea.<\/p>\n
The management board, established by the state secretary,
\nreportedly approved the proposal of PT Anggara early in June.<\/p>\n
In the proposal, PT Anggara said that the construction of the
\nbuilding was aimed at "helping small-scale companies to exhibit
\ntheir products at the same location as the Jakarta Convention
\nCenter at a lower rate."<\/p>\n
However, it had violated the permit by erecting a permanent
\nbuilding from cement and steel.<\/p>\n
Once the building is leveled, the mayoralty plans to restore
\nthe site as part of the Senayan green belt, Andi said, adding
\nthat the city needed more green areas to counter air pollution.<\/p>\n
Currently, several commercial buildings are located on about
\n109 hectares of the 279-hectare Bung Karno Sports Center Complex,
\nincluding Plaza Senayan, Hotel Mulia and Jakarta Convention
\nCenter.<\/p>\n
The mayoralty's decision to demolish PT Anggara's building was
\napplauded by the city administration and the City Council.<\/p>\n
The deputy chairman of Commission B for economic affairs,
\nAgung Imam Soemanto, admitted that PT Anggara had sent its
\nemployees to ask councillors to approve the construction of the
\nbuilding.<\/p>\n
"The councilllors could not approve the request considering
\nthat PT Anggara had violated the building permit," he remarked.<\/p>\n
Separately, Governor Sutiyoso voiced the City Council's
\nsupport for the mayoralty.<\/p>\n
"It is about law enforcement; the mayoralty should go ahead
\nwith its plan to demolish the building," he remarked.<\/p>\n
Previously, Sutiyoso claimed that the current management board
\nhad mismanaged the sports complex, referring to some
\nirregularities.<\/p>\n
He said that in accordance with the autonomy law, the right to
\nmanage the Bung Karno Sports Complex should be transferred to the
\ncity administration.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian Sports Committee (KONI), however, also staked
\nits claim over the area.<\/p>\n
The state secretary has not made any decision on the matter.
