Mayoralty ends water shortage<\/p>\n
BANJARMASIN, South Sumatra: The mayoralty here has exploited
\nextra drinking water sources to end a water shortage that hits
\nthe area almost every year.<\/p>\n
The local branch of the state-owned water company has built an
\ninstallation with a capacity of 500 liters per second. It takes
\nwater from the Riam Kanan irrigation canal.<\/p>\n
\"We can no longer rely on the Martapura and Tabuk rivers for
\ndrinking water because the water is salty from excess infusion
\nduring dry seasons,\" company director Soegiyarto told Antara
\nyesterday.<\/p>\n
The mayoralty now has three drinking water installations with
\na combined capacity of about 950 liters per second.<\/p>\n
\"If they operate at full capacity, they can meet 80 percent of
\nthe townspeople's demand for drinking water,\" he said. (pan)<\/p>",
