Mayor wants control over development intensified<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The City Council has instructed the South
\nJakarta mayor to get control of development in the South Jakarta
\nmayoralty and to cut back on the threats of demolition.<\/p>\n
Helmy AR Syihab, the chairman of the council's Commission C
\nwhich oversees financial affairs, said yesterday that the large
\nnumber of demolition letters issued by the mayor indicates that
\nbuilding control is still lax in the mayoralty.<\/p>\n
\"The construction of the buildings took several months, during
\nwhich time mayoralty officials could have monitored their
\nconstruction,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Helmy regretted the mayor's instruction to demolish so many
\nbuildings. \"Those buildings reflect public capability,\" he said,
\nadding that demolition means wasting time and money.<\/p>\n
He said the mayor should not only resort to demolition. \"I
\nthink a set of precautions would be more effective than
\ndemolishing the illegal buildings\".<\/p>\n
South Jakarta Mayor Pardjoko recently said that in the last
\ntwo years he has issued 3,600 letters instructing that buildings
\nconstructed without the proper documents be demolished.<\/p>\n
In response to the one-roof service system of building permit
\nprocedures implemented by the South Jakarta mayor, Helmy, who is
\nthe deputy chairman of the council's United Development Party
\nfaction, praised the system.<\/p>\n
\"Although the system does not make significant changes, it
\nprovides better services to the public,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He urged the four other mayors to implement the same system as
\ntheir South Jakarta counterpart, though suitable to their
