Mayor scolds careless developers<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Central Jakarta Mayor Abdul Kahfi has blamed
\nfloods in the area on the careless waste disposal by four
\ndevelopers.<\/p>\n
The developers disposed of cement waste into canals that run
\nthrough some Central Jakarta areas, narrowing the canals to only
\n30 centimeters in width from their original two meters, the mayor
\nsaid over the weekend.<\/p>\n
As a result, some Central Jakarta areas are often flooded
\nduring the wet season, Abdul told a public meeting.<\/p>\n
\"This is a bad example for civilians, whom we count on to
\nsupport our campaign for a clean city,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said many developers tend to neglect the environment in
\nachieving their business gains, lacking responsibility for the
\ngeneral public's interest.<\/p>\n
According to Abdul, one of the development projects
\nresponsible for the waste is Bank Indonesia's construction on Jl.
\nBudi Kemuliaan.<\/p>\n
Jakarta Governor Surjadi Soedirdja, who also attended the
\nmeeting, urged companies to be environmentally aware and help
\ncontrol the chronic floods in Central Jakarta, especially during
\nthe wet season.<\/p>\n
The governor said that piles of trash around shopping areas
\nand traditional markets could also cause flooding if not properly
\nmanaged, especially if they contained plastic waste, which is not
\nbiodegradable.<\/p>\n
\"It takes 400 years for plastics to disintegrate,\" Surjadi
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Also discussed was a sluice gate in Central Jakarta that had
\nbeen deactivated due to a power breakdown. The mayor called for
\nthe reactivation of the gate because it was important in
\ncontrolling the district's water distribution.<\/p>\n
\"Because the sluiceway does not function, many main streets in
\nCentral Jakarta are prone to flooding, which, in turn, affects
\ntraffic flow,\" Abdul said.<\/p>\n
The main streets affected include Jl. Prapatan, Jl. Singosari,
\nJl. Gajah Mada, Jl. Majapahit, Jl. Hasyim Ashari and Jl. Juanda
\nin Harmony; Jl. Gunung Sahari and the streets around the National
\nMonument; and the roundabout in front of Hotel Indonesia.<\/p>\n
About half of the greater Jakarta area is vulnerable to
