Mayor call for order at Pondok Labu market<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): South Jakarta Mayor H. Pardjoko has expressed
\nconcern over the many street vendors who recklessly operate in
\nand around the Pondok Labu market.<\/p>\n
Pardjoko ordered his subordinates to immediately patrol the
\nvendors operating at Pondok Labu market and check for proper
\nlicensing and positioning.<\/p>\n
"All members of the South Jakarta mayoralty office have to put
\nthe vendors in order so as to prevent them from obstructing
\ntraffic flow and to help maintain cleanliness in the area,"
\nPardjoko said to Antara after leading an operation against
\nnegligent vendors on Sunday morning.<\/p>\n
During the operation, Pardjoko was accompanied by a number of
\nnoted figures in the mayoralty.<\/p>\n
The order to get rid of the vendors was made by Pardjoko after
\nhe found out that many sellers did not take heed of the mayor's
\ncall for cleanliness.<\/p>\n
Pardjoko was increasingly emotional and commanded his officers
\nto demolish tents and other facilities used for the vendors'
\nbusiness activities.<\/p>\n
The Pondok Labu marketplace was renovated last year and looked
\nmore like a shopping center than a traditional market on its
\nopening day. But after just a few weeks the street vendors that
\nwere cleared away during the renovation herded back. They
\nreturned to their original spots, leaving the place as filthy as
\nit was before renovation.<\/p>\n
"The action was imperative because the vendors did not show
\nthe will to obey the mayoralty's law and order," Pardjoko
\nexplained furiously.<\/p>\n
After the operation, the mayor held an informal meeting with
\nmembers of the local neighborhood community in search of ways to
\nsolve the problem.<\/p>\n
Jufri, a university lecturer who lives near the market,
\nsuggested that the mayoralty allow the vendors to operate at a
\ndeserted 4,000 square-metre plot near the market.<\/p>\n
Pardjoko accepted the proposal in principle but didn't have
\nany information about the owner of the land.<\/p>\n
Pardjoko also demanded the mayoralty's information office to
\nbe swifter and more efficient in prohibiting street vendors. He
\nalso asked the mayoralty's sanitation office to further encourage
\nthe South Jakarta public to live hygienically in order to win the
\nAdipura trophy for cleanest area. (23)<\/p>",
