        "content": "<p>Maybank taps cyberspace<\/p>\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters): Malaysia's biggest bank Malayan<br>\nBanking Bhd (Maybank) on Friday launched the country's first<br>\nInternet banking service that it hopes will draw 200,000<br>\ndepositors in the first year.<\/p>\n<p>The bank's www.maybank2u.com site enables customers to do<br>\ntheir banking through the Internet from anywhere in the world,<br>\nbank officials said.<\/p>\n<p>State-controlled Maybank is the first local bank to start<br>\nInternet banking under a central bank ruling which takes effect<br>\nthis month. Foreign banks will have to wait 18 more months.<\/p>\n<p>Maybank chairman Mohamed Basir Ahmad said at the launch that<br>\nthe service would enable the bank to carry its brand name beyond<br>\nMalaysia.<\/p>\n<p>\"This global visibility will strengthen our presence overseas<br>\nenabling our branches there to target new customers,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Maybank's move into Internet banking comes as it prepares to<br>\nmerge with Phileo Allied Bhd, which owns cyber-savvy PhileoAllied<br>\nBank, and another bank.<\/p>",
