Last weekend Jakarta was frightening. The seizure of the
\nIndonesian Democratic Party's headquarters on Jl. Diponegoro left
\nthe main roads in the Matraman and Proklamasi areas looking like
\na war had taken place.<\/p>\n
I routinely have to use Jl. Diponegoro, where traffic was
\nrerouted due to the party's free speech forums.<\/p>\n
The clash between security officers and community members was
\nsad. It was as if this beloved country no longer had any laws.
\nAll sides seem to want to solve problems their own way, resorting
\nto violence at times.<\/p>\n
I was confused and frightened when I was in the vicinity of
\nthe Megaria theater on Saturday. People were running with fear on
\ntheir faces. Stones were flying. Why do some people get violent
\nso easily, I wondered.<\/p>\n
I am worried about the condition of the Indonesian Democratic
\nParty. Where is the principle of musyawarah (consensus)
\nchampioned by all sides. It is certainly not my intention to
\nblame any side for the violence, I only hope that it will soon
\nend.<\/p>\n
It would be regrettable if the progress we've made so far fell
\napart as a result of such tragic happenings.<\/p>\n
