Matsushita forms unit in RI<\/p>\n
TOKYO (Reuter): Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. said
\nyesterday it would form a lithium battery production subsidiary
\nin Bekasi, Indonesia, in June to meet growing demand for the
\nproduct throughout Asia.<\/p>\n
The new company, PT Panasonic Battery of Indonesia, will be
\ncapitalized at US$10 million and owned 35 percent by Matsushita
\nand the rest by two of Matsushita's subsidiaries.<\/p>\n
The new company plans to start in December production of coin-
\ntype lithium batteries, which are used in a wide range of
\nelectronic products including card-type calculators, electronic
\nnote books and watches.<\/p>\n
Matsushita plans to invest about $20 million and to make 50
\nmillion lithium batteries at the Indonesian unit in 1997.<\/p>\n
Batteries produced at the new plant will be exported mainly to
\nHong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore.<\/p>\n
The new company will be Matsushita's second overseas
\nproduction base for lithium batteries. The first unit was formed
\nin the U.S. state of Georgia.<\/p>",
