Matori's attack remains mystery<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The city police have failed to uncover the
\nmotive or the mastermind behind the March 5 attempted murder of
\nNational Awakening Party Chairman Matori Abdul Djalil at his
\nSouth Jakarta residence.<\/p>\n
In an interview with The Jakarta Post on Tuesday, Jakarta
\nPolice Chief Maj. Gen. Nurfaizi said a key factor in the
\ninvestigation was the apprehension of the two suspects, who are
\nstill at large.<\/p>\n
\"You have to understand that what we have now is all dead
\nevidence. We have to arrest Assadullah and Ichwan (the two
\nfugitives) to explain the evidence,\" Nurfaizi said.<\/p>\n
Matori, also Deputy Speaker of the People's Consultative
\nAssembly, suffered severe injuries to his head and hand after
\nbeing attacked by a man, later identified as Sarmo, alias Tarmo,
\nwho managed to escape from the scene with an accomplice on a
\nmotorcycle.<\/p>\n
According to police, the two abandoned the motorcycle after
\nbeing repeatedly struck by stones thrown by pursuers. They then
\nstopped an ojek (motorcycle taxi) and forced the driver to give
\nthem a ride.<\/p>\n
At the nearby Jagakarsa area, the two asked the ojek driver to
\npull over. After stopping the two fled in different directions.
\nThinking that the two refused to pay the fare, onlookers then
\nmobbed Tarmo to death. His accomplice Achmad Tazul Arifin, alias
\nSabar, was arrested a few days later.<\/p>\n
Based on Sabar's testimony, police named Assadullah and Ichwan
\nas the other suspects in the case. Detectives were then assigned
\nto track Assadullah's home in Cibitung, Bekasi, and Ichwan's
\nresidence in Petamburan. Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
At the two addresses, officers found 83 detonators, one hand
\ngrenade, seven maps of West Java and Jakarta, four passports
\nbearing the names of four different men, notebooks on warfare,
\nnotes on how to make a bomb, designs of several rifles and guns,
\nand notes on how to construct one.<\/p>\n
One of the maps depicts the South Jakarta subdistrict of
\nCiganjur, which is also the neighborhood of President Abdurrahman
\nWahid's private residence.<\/p>\n
Although the Ciganjur map provides no other information, the
\nJakarta Police worry that the suspects might also have the
\nPresident on their list of targets.<\/p>\n
\"The targets may have included the President as you pointed
\nout. When it comes to politics, a president of any country can
\nbecome a target. (The former U.S.) President (John F.) Kennedy is
\none example,\" Nurfaizi said.<\/p>\n
A police officer close to the investigation said earlier that
\ndetectives were having difficulty making a case from the
\navailable evidence.<\/p>\n
\"The more we analyze, the more baffling the case becomes,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
According to Nurfaizi, there was a good possibility that the
\nmen had received their warfare training abroad.<\/p>\n
\"I feel 60 percent certain these men were trained in Moro
\n(Philippines). Moro hardliners are known for their sadistic
\nways,\" he said, giving no further explanation.<\/p>\n
Some pages in the textbook on rifle and gun design, for
\ninstance, depicts different kinds of grenade launching rifles,
