        "content": "<p>Maternal mortality rate investigation<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA: An international organization has agreed to research<br>\nIndonesia&apos;s high maternal mortality rate to help formulate a<br>\nstrategy to reduce the death rate.<\/p>\n<p>The research will be conduced by the Initiative for Maternal<br>\nMortality Program Assessment (IMMPACT) in cooperation with the<br>\nUniversity of Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of Health Achmad Sujudi, during the launch of the<br>\nprogram, said efforts to curb the death rate since 1988 had<br>\nfailed to live up to expectations.<\/p>\n<p>Figures released in 1997 show that every year 17,000 mothers<br>\ndie during or after delivering a baby. The figure is triple the<br>\naverage rate in Southeast Asia and 50 times the rate in developed<br>\ncountries.<\/p>\n<p>IMMPACT consists of researchers from the University of<br>\nAberdeen in Scotland, England&apos;s London School of Hygiene and<br>\nTropical Medicine and the University of York, John Hopkins<br>\nUniversity in the United States, and the Institute of Tropical<br>\nMedicine in Belgium. -JP<\/p>",
