Mass plundering at plantations<\/p>\n
SEMARANG: Some 1,000 hectares of plantations belonging to
\nstate and private companies in the provinces have been plundered
\nor occupied in the past year, costing the firms hundreds millions
\nrupiah in financial losses.<\/p>\n
Executive chairman of the Association of Central Java and
\nYogyakarta Plantation Companies, R. Soetono, said on Wednesday
\nthe crops mostly affected were coconuts, cacao beans, coffee
\nbeans and rubber.<\/p>\n
"I don't know the motives behind the plundering, but I suspect
\nthe move was sparked by disappointment or abuse of the reform
\nspirit for personal purposes," Soetono was quoted by Antara.<\/p>\n
The association has established an advocacy team to cope with
\nthe matter, and called on the police to prevent further
\nplundering in the future.<\/p>\n
"If the case is left unsettled, I'm afraid only a few
\ninvestors will be willing to put their money in agribusiness
\nhere," Soetono said.<\/p>",
