Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources\n(ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia, stated that accelerating investments in the\nenergy transition and resolving the strategic Masela Block project are\npriorities in discussions during his visit to Japan alongside the\nPresident of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto.<\/p>\n
\u201cFollowing directives from President Prabowo, I have been tasked with\ntwo matters. The first is to ensure the acceleration of investments in\nthe energy transition. The second concerns Inpex and the Masela Block,\u201d\nBahlil said in his official statement, confirmed by ANTARA from Jakarta\non Monday.<\/p>\n
He explained that the Masela Block project, which has long been in\nthe discussion phase, is now showing significant progress following\nintensive meetings throughout 2025.<\/p>\n
The government has agreed on a development scheme for the project\nwith an initial value of US$20.9 billion, which has the potential to\nincrease in line with geopolitical dynamics and the addition of carbon\ncapture and storage (CCS) technology.<\/p>\n
Bahlil added that the overall investment value of the project is\nestimated to exceed Rp300 trillion, while emphasising the dominance of\nthe ESDM sector in the incoming investment structure.<\/p>\n
He stressed that the government is targeting the acceleration of the\nproject\u2019s implementation, including the execution of the Engineering,\nProcurement, and Construction (EPC) tender and the completion of the\nFront-End Engineering and Design (FEED) in 2026.<\/p>\n
\u201cWell, as the Minister of ESDM, in the President\u2019s directives, when I\nmet the President Director of Inpex with the President, he hopes that\nthis project can be implemented quickly. And this year, 2026, we will\nconduct the EPC tender. The FEED will also be completed. And we request\nit to be accelerated,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, he emphasised that accelerating this project will have a\nsignificant impact on national energy resilience, given that the Masela\nBlock is one of the large-scale (giant) oil and gas projects that can\nstrengthen Indonesia\u2019s position as a global gas player.<\/p>\n
The government is also encouraging the optimisation of gas\nutilisation for domestic needs to strengthen national energy\ndownstreaming.<\/p>\n
In addition to strengthening the oil and gas sector, the government\ncontinues to promote the use of non-fossil energy as part of the\nnational energy transition strategy.<\/p>\n
The utilisation of geothermal, hydropower, solar, and wind energy\nwill continue to be encouraged as long as they are supported by\nefficient and competitive technology.<\/p>\n
In this context, Bahlil affirmed that accelerating the energy\ntransition is an important step to anticipate unpredictable global\nuncertainties.<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause we never know when this geopolitics will end. So whether\ngeothermal, water, sun, or wind, as long as there is efficient pricing\ntechnology, we will promote it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He also assured that the government continues to conduct intensive\ncommunication and coordination across ministries, including with the\nMinistry of Foreign Affairs, to maintain investment certainty and the\nsmooth running of national strategic projects amid geopolitical\ndynamics.<\/p>\n
