The Masaro waste processing machine in Senteluk Village, West Lombok, valued at Rp 10 billion, has malfunctioned again shortly after repairs, prompting complaints from the West Lombok Environmental Agency (DLH) to the supplier from Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB). The issue stems from incomplete waste sorting, allowing materials like stones and bricks to damage the incinerator's blower, leading to safety risks such as unfiltered black smoke. This recurring problem has resulted in subpar performance, processing only a fraction of its intended 20 tonnes per day, exacerbating waste accumulation and highlighting challenges in Indonesia's waste management infrastructure.

The Masaro Zero Waste Management waste processing machine in Senteluk
Village, Batu Layar Subdistrict, West Lombok, has broken down again.
This comes despite the machine having been repaired following its
previous malfunction on Saturday (7/3/2026).

The Head of the West Lombok Environmental Agency (DLH), M. Busyairi,
has lodged a complaint with the supplier regarding the damage. “We
complained to the supplier’s side, both via WhatsApp and by sending them
a letter,” he stated on Wednesday (1/4/2026).

Busyairi explained that the damage to the Rp 10 billion machine is
identical to the previous incident, affecting the incinerator’s blower
component.

“Actually, the damage isn’t severe, but the blower’s weld has come
loose. If it’s loose, it’s dangerous because the black smoke doesn’t
pass through the filter,” he clarified.

“Therefore, it needs to be rewelded, and for that, we need their
technician (from the supplier). However, today we requested that for
every disruption, our technicians handle it, with their technicians only
providing guidance,” he added.

According to Busyairi, the damage was caused by waste entering the
Masaro machine that wasn’t perfectly sorted. Materials such as stones
and bricks are often found entering the processing machine, causing it
to break.

Busyairi described his agency as a victim of the Masaro supplier from
Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), as the machine’s performance in
processing waste is not optimal and it frequently experiences
breakdowns.

In fact, according to Busyairi, the processing machine was initially
planned to handle unsorted waste with a capacity of 20 tonnes per day,
but in reality, it only processes a few tonnes per day.

“Well, actually, we expected this new machine to work normally. The
budget is so substantial. If problems keep occurring, then we’re also
victims, meaning waste piles up every day,” he emphasised.
",
