Former Indonesian Attorney General from 1999-2001, Marzuki Darusman,\nhas stated that the acid attack on KontraS activist Andrie Yunus\nconstitutes an act of terrorism.<\/p>\n
Marzuki said that the heinous act fully meets the definition of\nterrorism because it has caused widespread anxiety in society.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat has happened here is perhaps more than just an assault with the\npotential (to cause) death to brother Andrie. This is an incident that\nhas induced widespread anxiety in society,\u201d Marzuki said during a press\nconference in Central Jakarta on Wednesday (18\/3).<\/p>\n
\u201cThus, it can be said that what has occurred fully qualifies as\nterrorism, having caused widespread anxiety, and thereby meeting all\ndefinitions of terrorism comprehensively,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n
According to Marzuki, this incident must not end merely with arrests.\nHe urged the authorities to rigorously investigate the case, as the\nattack is linked to the struggle for democracy.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is necessary to place these arrests in a far more serious context\nbecause, in essence and in the manner of its occurrence, this event\nindicates a situation where an act of terrorism has been committed\nagainst an activist voicing issues related to the major political\nproblems in our country,\u201d Marzuki stated.<\/p>\n
Andrie Yunus became the victim of an acid splashing by unidentified\nindividuals on Thursday (12\/3) night.<\/p>\n
The attack resulted in injuries to Andrie\u2019s hands and feet, as well\nas vision impairment. Medical examination results indicate that Andrie\nsuffered 24% burns.<\/p>\n
Various civil society groups have urged the government to uncover the\nattack on the human rights activist. The coalition demands that the\nperpetrators be arrested and brought to court.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe state must not pretend not to see the political context of this\nattack. Freedom cannot be bought at the price of fear. The acid attack\non Andrie, which occurred exactly one year after his protest action\nrelated to the TNI Bill at the Fairmont Hotel on 15 March 2024, is an\nunacceptable and systematically planned attempted murder,\u201d reads a joint\nstatement from Amnesty International Indonesia, KontraS, and other civil\nsociety groups across the archipelago.<\/p>\n
The civil society coalition also urged the state to ensure that\nAndrie and his family receive the best medical care. They called on the\ngovernment to form a joint independent fact-finding team, in\nconsultation with civil society, and to guarantee a transparent,\nimpartial, and accountable process.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Indonesian National Police must not hesitate and should\nimmediately arrest the perpetrators and intellectual actors of this\nattack in a transparent and accountable manner.
