Marksmen set to target snipers in Ambon<\/p>\n
Two groups of paramilitary marksmen have been stationed in
\nconflict-prone areas of Ambon city to combat snipers during any
\nrioting.<\/p>\n
The marksmen, equipped with high-powered rifles, will be
\nstationed atop high-rise buildings in conflict-prone areas like
\nTalake, Batugantung and Trikora.<\/p>\n
According to the chief of the Pelopor II unit company, First
\nInsp. Yustanto Mujiharso, the two groups of 20 marksmen could
\ncover the entire Ambon city during a riot.<\/p>\n
\"They have special qualifications as marksmen. With our
\npersonnel, we're optimistic we can counter snipers in riots in
\nAmbon,\" Yustanto told The Jakarta Post at the company's
\nheadquarter in Talake, Ambon.<\/p>\n
He said the presence of snipers in Ambon had created concern
\nsince they were both armed and trained. Their many victims were
\nshot either in the head or chest.<\/p>\n
The chief of Ambon island and Lease Islands police, Adj. Sr.
\nComr. Leonidas Braksan, said the marksmen would be deployed on
\nApril 25, the anniversary of the separatist South Maluku Republic
\n(RMS), when security disturbances were anticipated.<\/p>\n
\"I told them to train them for sharp shooting and other skills
\nbecause we have to be prepared for the worst on April 25. We
\ndon't want another incident like last year's,\" Leonidas said,
\nreferring to the deaths of at least 41 people in security
\ndisturbances on April 25.<\/p>\n
