Market research urged for tourism<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA: Regular market research was vital if Yogyakarta was
\nto develop tourism, as it would justify what approach best suited
\ndemand, an expert says.<\/p>\n
"The results of such research is a guarantee of success to win
\nin the market," tourism expert Janianton Damanik of Gadjah Mada
\nUniversity's postgraduate program on tourism studies said here on
\nThursday.<\/p>\n
Unfortunately, he said, the tourism sector in the province
\nrarely undertook such research, mostly because it was not yet
\nconsidered important for planning marketing strategy.<\/p>\n
As a result, many of the tourism marketing strategies applied
\nwere based only on speculative assumptions.<\/p>\n
Research was urgent to better know the market and understand
\ntourists' expectations with regard to tourism products. That
\nwould enable the business community to develop the best products,
\nas well as a marketing strategy, Janianton said.<\/p>\n
"The results of research may be quite different from our
\nexpectations. They may reveal that the most wanted product is not
\nours. But, it will be much better that way than to keep offering
\nunwanted products or applying unsuitable strategies," Janianton
