Marines implicated in Asaba shooting<\/p>\n

The Indonesian Navy is currently questioning four Marine soldiers
\nover their alleged involvement in the murders of a businessman
\nand his Army's Special Forces (Kopassus) bodyguard last month.<\/p>\n
The four soldiers are identified as Second Lt. SAS, Corporal
\nSR, Corporal FH and First Pvt. SS from the Second Marine Brigade
\nbased in Cilandak, South Jakarta, the Navy spokesman, Commodore
\nAdhyaman A. Saputra, said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
"Following the reports of the police and other sources, our
\ninternal affairs department have been questioning the four
\nsoldiers. They have been detained at the Navy's military police
\ndetention center, here (at the Navy headquarters in Cilangkap,
\nEast Jakarta) since July 31," he said.<\/p>\n
"The investigation is focusing on the murders of PT Asaba
\npresident director Boedyharto Angsono and his bodyguard (First.
\nSgt. Edy Siyet)," he added.<\/p>\n
Adhyaman confirmed that the four soldiers had been
\nmoonlighting as private security guards for Gunawan Santoso,
\nBoedyharto's former son-in-law. They are also believed to have
\nbeen implicated in the murders.<\/p>\n
Gunawan has been hunted by the police since his escape from
\nKuningan Penitentiary in Cirebon, West Java, on Jan. 15. Now, he
\nis also wanted for questioning, as witnesses have claimed that he
\nmight be involved with Boedyharto's killing.<\/p>\n
"The Navy leaders have ordered us to take stern sanctions
\nagainst the four soldiers, if they are found guilty. The
\nsanctions could include discharging them from the military,"
\nAdhyaman said.<\/p>\n
"They will probably be charged with committing premeditated
\nmurder. However, we must wait for further investigation," he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
He also emphasized that "the Navy investigators have yet to
\ndeclare the four soldiers suspects."<\/p>\n
The four soldiers could face a maximum sentence of 20 years
\nimprisonment. They will be tried in a military court.<\/p>\n
Boedyharto, 60, and Edy were gunned down by an unidentified
\nman in the parking lot of Sasana Krida sport stadium in North
\nJakarta on July 20.<\/p>\n
They were about to play basketball when a man approached them
\nand started to shoot at Edy before shooting Boedyharto.<\/p>\n
Boedyharto suffered six shots to the head and body while Edy
\nwas shot once in the head. Police found eight spent cartridge
\ncases at the scene.<\/p>\n
Boedyharto's driver Darjan, who witnessed the shooting,
\nsurvived the incident as he remained inside the bulletproof
\nMercedes-Benz S600 car.<\/p>\n
The shooting took place only a month after Asaba's finance
\ndirector Paulus Tejakusuma was shot in Jl. Angkasa, Kemayoran,
\nCentral Jakarta. He was severely injured and is reportedly
\nundergoing medical treatment overseas.<\/p>\n
Days after the murder, the National Military Police Commander
\nMaj. Gen. Sulaiman A.B. formed an investigation team comprising
\nof Jakarta Military Police officers and police personnel after
\nlearning that the killer used a military standard weapon, either
\na gun or a rifle, with caliber 9mm.<\/p>\n
A source from Boedyharto's family said that the motive behind
\nthe murder could be linked to a family feud.<\/p>\n
However, Adhyaman said that so far, "the soldiers have yet to
\ninform us who instructed the execution of the murders or what the
\nmotive behind them was."<\/p>",
