Mar'ie inaugurates public works projects<\/p>\n
UJUNGPANDANG, South Sulawesi (Antara): Minister of Finance
\nMar'ie Muhammad opened public works projects here yesterday worth
\nRp 27.7 billion (US$9.6 million).<\/p>\n
They include a dam on Jeneberang River and clean water
\ninstallations.<\/p>\n
The 330-meter-long Jeneberang dam, to stop flooding and
\nseawater intrusion, is the first of its type in Indonesia. It was
\ncompleted seven months ahead of schedule.<\/p>\n
The projects were financed by soft loans from the Japan
\nOverseas Economic Cooperation Fund, said Sanapati Tarebbang, the
\nhead of the South Sulawesi public works office.<\/p>\n
The dam system will be able to collect 500 liters of water a
\nsecond, while controlling floods in southern Ujungpandang, which
\nhas suffered recurring floods.<\/p>\n
Mar'ie told local people not to waste water because it was an
\nexpensive commodity which should always be readily available.<\/p>\n
The Jeneberang dam would prevent floods, seawater intrusion
\nand attract foreign tourists, Mar'ie said.<\/p>\n
Mar'ie was flanked by South Sulawesi Governor HZB Palaguna,
\nthe director general for irrigation and several provincial
\nofficials at the inauguration.<\/p>",
