Mar'ie calls on officials to improve their integrity<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Finance Mar'ie Muhammad reiterated
\nto ministry officials yesterday that they must improve their
\nintegrity in managing state funds.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the commemoration of the country's 50th Finance
\nDay, the minister said that the ministry's officials should
\ndemonstrate their integrity in all aspects of their jobs.<\/p>\n
\"Finance officials should base their deeds and conduct on
\nexisting regulations and laws, respecting the public interest and
\navoiding practices that could cause losses to society and the
\nstate,\" the minister said.<\/p>\n
Mar'ie said that malfeasance is against all moral and ethical
\nstandards so that anything that causes a loss to the public would
\nbe opposed not only at home but also by \"the international
\ncommunity\".<\/p>\n
This is not the first time Mar'ie, dubbed by the press as Mr.
\nClean, has spoken about ethics and morals. A former director
\ngeneral of tax and a former chairman of the Association of
\nIslamic Students, Mar'ie recently stressed the need to add \"more
\nmoral value\" to the country's development plans.<\/p>\n
In his speech yesterday, Mar'ie said that the need to improve
\nintegrity will become ever more important as globalization
\npermeates more aspects of society in the next decade.<\/p>\n
\"In the integrated world, anything that is against
\ninternational ethics, will quickly become a global issue,\" he
\nsaid, warning that Indonesia, as a developing nation, should
\ntherefore learn how to conduct its affairs according to
\ninternationally-accepted standards.<\/p>\n
In the fiscal sector, the minister said that the integrity
\nshould be reflected by the ability to manage the government's
\nspending according to previously stated plans.<\/p>\n
At the commemoration of the Financial Day held in the parking
\nlot of the Ministry of Finance complex in Central Jakarta, the
\nminister presented tokens of appreciation to 1,874 active and
\nretired ministry officials.<\/p>\n
Of the recipients, 1,097 received Satyalancana Karya Satya
\nawards from President Soeharto for their strong dedication and
\nthe other 777 received appreciation awards from the minister of
\nfinance.<\/p>\n
The recipients included Secretary-General of the Ministry of
\nFinance Dono Iskandar, Chairman of the Financial and Monetary
\nMonitoring Board Marzuki Usman and the president of state-owned
\ninsurance firm PT Jasa Rahardja, Ida Bagus Putu Sarga.<\/p>\n
After presenting the awards, the minister signed the first
\nletter using the 50th Financial Day series.<\/p>\n
On Oct. 30, 1946, 50 years ago, the government first
\ncirculated its own bank notes, previously called Oeang Repoeblik
\nIndonesia (ORI), and now known as the rupiah. The date of the
\nissuance of the first bank notes is now know as Financial Day.
