        "content": "<p>Mar'ie calls on officials to improve their integrity<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Finance Mar'ie Muhammad reiterated<br>\nto ministry officials yesterday that they must improve their<br>\nintegrity in managing state funds.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the commemoration of the country's 50th Finance<br>\nDay, the minister said that the ministry's officials should<br>\ndemonstrate their integrity in all aspects of their jobs.<\/p>\n<p>\"Finance officials should base their deeds and conduct on<br>\nexisting regulations and laws, respecting the public interest and<br>\navoiding practices that could cause losses to society and the<br>\nstate,\" the minister said.<\/p>\n<p>Mar'ie said that malfeasance is against all moral and ethical<br>\nstandards so that anything that causes a loss to the public would<br>\nbe opposed not only at home but also by \"the international<br>\ncommunity\".<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time Mar'ie, dubbed by the press as Mr.<br>\nClean, has spoken about ethics and morals. A former director<br>\ngeneral of tax and a former chairman of the Association of<br>\nIslamic Students, Mar'ie recently stressed the need to add \"more<br>\nmoral value\" to the country's development plans.<\/p>\n<p>In his speech yesterday, Mar'ie said that the need to improve<br>\nintegrity will become ever more important as globalization<br>\npermeates more aspects of society in the next decade.<\/p>\n<p>\"In the integrated world, anything that is against<br>\ninternational ethics, will quickly become a global issue,\" he<br>\nsaid, warning that Indonesia, as a developing nation, should<br>\ntherefore learn how to conduct its affairs according to<br>\ninternationally-accepted standards.<\/p>\n<p>In the fiscal sector, the minister said that the integrity<br>\nshould be reflected by the ability to manage the government's<br>\nspending according to previously stated plans.<\/p>\n<p>At the commemoration of the Financial Day held in the parking<br>\nlot of the Ministry of Finance complex in Central Jakarta, the<br>\nminister presented tokens of appreciation to 1,874 active and<br>\nretired ministry officials.<\/p>\n<p>Of the recipients, 1,097 received Satyalancana Karya Satya<br>\nawards from President Soeharto for their strong dedication and<br>\nthe other 777 received appreciation awards from the minister of<br>\nfinance.<\/p>\n<p>The recipients included Secretary-General of the Ministry of<br>\nFinance Dono Iskandar, Chairman of the Financial and Monetary<br>\nMonitoring Board Marzuki Usman and the president of state-owned<br>\ninsurance firm PT Jasa Rahardja, Ida Bagus Putu Sarga.<\/p>\n<p>After presenting the awards, the minister signed the first<br>\nletter using the 50th Financial Day series.<\/p>\n<p>On Oct. 30, 1946, 50 years ago, the government first<br>\ncirculated its own bank notes, previously called Oeang Repoeblik<br>\nIndonesia (ORI), and now known as the rupiah.
