Marhaen group protest against discrimination<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Leaders of a mass organization, based on the
\nteachings of the late president Sukarno, protested yesterday the
\ngovernment's discriminatory treatment of it.<\/p>\n
Led by Sukmawati, Sukarno's third daughter, members of the
\ncentral executive board of the Marhaen People's Movement came to
\nlodge their protest with the House of Representatives.<\/p>\n
No legislator was available to meet them as the house is
\ncurrently holding internal, closed, commission sessions.<\/p>\n
Sukmawati, chairman Soenardi and other activists later tried
\nto file their protest with the National Commission on Human
\nRights. But they also failed to meet with any official.<\/p>\n
The leaders said their \"activities have been hampered because
\nof the Minister of Home Affairs' failure in registering the
\nMarhaen People's Movement\".<\/p>\n
The organization was recently denied police permits, to hold a
\ngathering in North Sumatra, because it was considered illegal.<\/p>\n
The activists said the group has not been included in the list
\nof 738 mass organizations that have been approved by the
\ngovernment.<\/p>\n
Sukmawati said her organization has met every condition
\nrequired of an organization, including a stipulation of Pancasila
\nas its sole ideology.<\/p>\n
Sukarno established marhaenism, an ideology derived from the
\nprinciples of socio-nationalism and democracy, and later applied
\nit as the basis for his Indonesian Nationalist Party.<\/p>\n
The party later merged with several Christian-based parties
\nand became the Indonesian Democratic Party, which is currently
\nchaired by Megawati, another of Sukarno's daughters.<\/p>\n
Marhaen was the name of a poor farmer whom Sukarno met.<\/p>\n
\"If people say Marhaen does not recognize Pancasila, it's not
\ntrue,\" Sukmawati said. \"Not only do we recognize Pancasila, we
\nalso implement its principles, and defend it, and the 1945
