Manila's steel mill<\/p>\n
MANILA (AFP): The construction of the Philippines' first
\nintegrated steel mill will start in June, this time using
\ntechnology from the Voest-Alpine company of Austria rather than a
\nmothballed British plant, the industrial group spearheading the
\nproject said Friday.<\/p>\n
Eduardo Gumaru, spokesman of Grupo F. Jacinto, a business
\ngroup long engaged in the local steel industry, said the project,
\nincluding the construction of the plant in the southern
\nPhilippines, will cost about $1.06 billion.<\/p>\n
Jacinto had decided to use a state-of-the-art \"Corex-type,\"
\nplant from Voest-Alpine rather than go with their original plan
\nto transfer a mothballed blast furnace from British Steel's
\nformer plant in Ravenscraig, Scotland, he said.<\/p>\n
He also said that instead of manufacturing only steel slab, as
\noriginally planned, the enterprise now intended to produce hot-
\nrolled coil.<\/p>\n
An earlier plan to sell the plant's output almost exclusively
\nto Ang Feng Steel of Taiwan, however, will not push through as
\nthe Taiwan firm wanted to buy mainly steel slab.<\/p>",
