        "content": "<p>Manila to probe gun smuggling<\/p>\n<p>MANILA (AFP): The Philippine police are to cooperate with<br>\ntheir Japanese counterparts in a probe into the smuggling of<br>\nFilipino-made handguns into Japan, an official said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The Firearms and Explosives Division chief, Senior<br>\nSuperintendent Marcelo Navarro, told reporters Japanese police<br>\nhave tagged the Philippines as the third largest source of guns<br>\nfor the yakuza, Japan&apos;s organized crime syndicates, next to the<br>\nUnited States and China.<\/p>\n<p>Manila made several arrests of suspected gun smugglers in the<br>\ncentral city of Cebu last year. Illegal gunsmiths proliferate in<br>\nDanao city, near Cebu.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Most of these guns are smuggled by ships passing along the<br>\nPhilippines and are being picked up by boats upon entry to<br>\nJapan&apos;s territory,&quot; he added.
