        "content": "<p>Manila to import rice<\/p>\n<p>MANILA (AP): President Joseph Estrada has authorized a<br>\ngovernment agency to import up to 300,000 metric tons of rice<br>\nbecause of damage to rice crops from four recent typhoons,<br>\nofficials said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The National Food Authority sought Estrada's permission to<br>\nimport rice after 734,750 tons of rice worth 1.7 billion pesos<br>\n(US$42.5 million) was destroyed by the typhoons, mostly on the<br>\nmain Philippine island of Luzon.<\/p>\n<p>Presidential spokesman Jerry Barican said an inter-agency<br>\ncommittee will assess in about a week the amount of rice that<br>\nwill be imported under the authorization.<\/p>\n<p>The committee will examine how much rice harvests from the<br>\nsouthern Philippine region of Mindanao can offset the crops<br>\ndestroyed by the typhoons, Barican said.<\/p>",
