        "content": "<p>Manila, Beijing avoid Spratlys<\/p>\n<p>MANILA (DPA): The defense ministers of the Philippines and<br>\nChina avoided discussing their nations' rival claims to the<br>\nSpratly Islands at a meeting in Manila yesterday, but both later<br>\nreiterated their commitments on peacefully resolving the dispute.<\/p>\n<p>Chinese Defense Minister Chi Haotian told reporters that he<br>\ndid not discuss the Spratlys issue with his Philippine<br>\ncounterpart but he went on to note that a peaceful resolution of<br>\nthe issue would be \"beneficial to the stability and peace in the<br>\nAsia-Pacific region\".<\/p>\n<p>Chi added that, during his meeting with Philippine Defense<br>\nSecretary Renato de Villa, he proposed more joint activities<br>\nbetween the Chinese and Philippine armed forces in a bid to<br>\nfoster friendly defense contacts between the two countries.<\/p>\n<p>\"Mr de Villa and I believe that we should try our best to push<br>\nforward our friendship and improve the relations of the two armed<br>\nforces to a higher and new level,\" said Chi, who arrived for a<br>\nseven-day visit last Friday.<\/p>",
