Manila airport inspected<\/p>\n
MANILA (AFP): A U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
\nmission will arrive in the Philippines to assess if safety
\nstandards at the country's main international airport meets its
\nstandards, aviation officials said here Saturday.<\/p>\n
The team, which will arrive on Sunday, will examine radar and
\nnavigational systems as well as other safety systems at the
\nairport in a review which could determine whether it will be
\ntaken off the FAA list of unsafe airports.<\/p>\n
An FAA team earlier this month certified that the airport met
\nits standards as far as security was concerned, after the
\nintroduction of new anti-terrorism measures at the airport.<\/p>\n
The FAA, in 1995 downgraded the Manila airport from its
\n"Category I" rating of safe airports after they found
\ninadequacies in both the security and safety conditions.<\/p>\n
Under this standard, U.S. nationals flying to the Philippines
\nare warned that the airport is unsafe.<\/p>",
