Ecosystems of mangroves play a crucial role in maintaining coastal\nbalance, absorbing carbon, and protecting biodiversity. To strengthen\nunderstanding of these strategic functions, students from the Department\nof Environmental Science, School of Postgraduate Sustainable Development\nStudies (SPPB) at the University of Indonesia conducted an Ecology Field\nPracticum 2026 in the Jakarta Mangrove Resort area, Angke Kapuk, North\nJakarta. The activity, held to commemorate World Environment Day,\ncarried the theme \u2018Introduction to Ecosystems and Greenhouse Mangrove:\nEcology Field Learning\u2019. The field practicum was attended by students\nfrom the Master\u2019s Programme in Environmental Science, the Master\u2019s\nProgramme in Disaster Management, and the Doctoral Programme in\nEnvironmental Science at the University of Indonesia. Through this\nactivity, participants gained direct learning experience regarding\nvarious aspects of mangrove ecology, from ecological functions,\nconservation and rehabilitation efforts, to the role of the mangrove\ngreenhouse as an environmental education tool. The participants were\nalso encouraged to understand the importance of environmental education\nin building awareness and driving real community action to preserve\nnature.<\/p>\n
Andreas Pramudianto, the activity chairperson and a lecturer in\nEnvironmental Law at SPPB UI, stated that the commemoration of World\nEnvironment Day is an important momentum to increase the younger\ngeneration\u2019s awareness of the environmental challenges currently faced.\nAccording to Andreas, mangroves not only function as natural fortresses\nthat protect coastal areas from abrasion and disaster impacts, but also\nplay a vital role in climate change mitigation through their ability to\nabsorb large amounts of carbon. \u2018Mangroves are not only natural coastal\nfortresses capable of absorbing carbon and protecting communities from\nabrasion and coastal disasters, but also natural laboratories that serve\nas learning tools for future generations. Through this activity, we hope\nto give rise to agents of change who possess concern and commitment\ntowards environmental preservation,\u2019 he said. This activity also served\nas a form of support for the global theme of World Environment Day,\nwhich emphasises the importance of collective action in maintaining the\nearth\u2019s sustainability through education, conservation, and active\ncommunity participation.<\/p>\n
As the country with the largest area of mangrove ecosystems in the\nworld, Indonesia bears a significant responsibility to maintain the\nsustainability of its mangrove forests. Besides functioning as blue\ncarbon sinks, mangroves also act as coastal protectors and habitats for\nvarious species of flora and fauna. Through the Ecology Field Practicum\n2026, Environmental Science students at the University of Indonesia\naffirmed their commitment to continuously developing applicable and\nsustainable environmental education.
